Fire ants are red-brown in color and about 1/4″ long, and carry a nasty stinger along with a powerful bite. Not only are they a nuisance and a danger, but they can also ruin landscaping, interfere with the electrical components in home A/C units and other appliances, plus trigger allergic reactions in some people and pets.
Fire ants typically nest under objects that provide shelter and protection such as logs, rocks or other items not usually disturbed. Their nests are also typically found near moist areas, and will create large mounds in the event no cover is available in the open terrain. Fire ants feed mostly on young, small plants or small insects such as crickets or grasshoppers. If a fire ant colony feels threatened by a small animal, they will attack en-masse and can sometimes kill the intruder.
What makes fire ants unique is, unlike other ants that bite to make a wound and spray acid on it to burn, they bite only to grip their victim and then use a stinger in the abdomen to inject a toxic venom called “solenopsin”. When a person is stung with this painful venom, a sensation similar to being burned by fire ensues, hence the name “fire ant”. For those who are especially sensitive to venomous insects, their stings can be deadly in numbers, similar to bee stings.
Two applications of Fire Ant bait per year are usually all you need to be done with fire ants. This treatment is specially formulated for these tough pests, yet safe for humans and pets. Due to the biology of fire ants and the nature of the product timing is very important during the application of the bait. The treatments can be done at anytime of year but the optimum time for treatment is in spring around April and again in September. After application the bait need around two to three weeks to completely eliminate the fire ant population. If any fire ant mounds reappear after that we will come back free of charge.
|Only effective on fire ants|
